Text Box: Dear Friends:
Over the next few days we will be commemorating another anniversary of one of the most monumental tragedies ever to have happened within our borders: September 11th. Six short years ago our country experienced an internal fracture that traveled to the very core of our emotional foundation. Just like the day President Kennedy was shot, we will always remember what we were doing the moment we heard news of the Twin Towers being under attack. Our collective shock, horror and grief will reverberate throughout the galactic ethers for a very long time to come. Yet, the good news is we still stand strong as a nation and we have faced our worst fears with remarkable resilience and fortitude. As Americans we can be proud of our moral fiber and spiritual idealism which survived the vicissitudes of our collective post 911 trauma. Not only did we just survive , we did so with enhanced skills of discernment and a deepened capacity to expand our sense of patriotic community. We were one family in sorrow that day. We were one people in need of great healing. It is said that from every challenge in life there emerges a gift. And so it is, that on September 11, 2001 we were offered the gift of renewal. We were given a brand new chance to build a renewed sense of oneness in “one nation under God”. We are The United States of America: the mightiest country ever imagined on the face of this earth. So, at this time let us search our soul’s conscience to make sure we are not undermining our greatest founding principles: “We are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” By God, let’s keep it that way! Let us not give away our power to elected officials. Our sustained integrity as a nation is completely in our own hands.
With love and purpose,
Dannion and Kathryn

Text Box: Hey Everybody!

   On September 15, 2007 General David H. Petraeus (top commander in Iraq) and Ryan C. Crocker (US Ambassador to Iraq) will testify before congress regarding the war. But I believe I already know what they will say: “The surge is working! We need to stay in Iraq! The Iraqi people are much better off since we’ve arrived! If we leave now the terrorists will soon be at our door! Iran is the most evil country in the world!” Using this as his rationalization, President Bush is hoping that Congress will believe these fairy-tales long enough to approve raising the debt ceiling. Then he wants to borrow another 50 billion dollars on top of the 147 billion he has already added to the present budget. This will bring the cost of the Afghan and Iraqi conflict to over 3 billion dollars per week!

Now, keep in mind that we borrow, from the Chinese, Japanese and the European Union, approximately 3 billion dollars a day in order to support the American Dream and War Machine. So, let’s take a look at another aspect of our nation building, democracy delivering experiment in insanity: the conditions being endured by our men and women in the military. The Pentagon’s top brass have issued statements that they believe the military is cracking under the inhumane pressure of multiple deployments. More than 118 service personnel have committed in Iraq since April 2003. Who knows how many have taken their lives in Afghanistan? And how many came home without receiving proper care only to take their own lives as a result?

Fifty-six thousand military personnel have been diagnosed with mental disorders since 2003 and yet they have been re-deployed to the war-torn areas. The general accounting office, The Federal Watchdog Agency, reports that 4 out of 5 re-deployed vets are in extremely high risk states of severe mental disorder. The official government remedy to this is 72 hours of R&R, a prescription of Prozac or Zoloft and then, an immediate return to their original duty station. Both of these prescribed drugs have side effects leading to suicide under high stress conditions. So, you tell me, what the hell are we doing to our sons and daughters? How would you feel if it were your child, husband or wife. Well, guess what, this is exactly what is happening to someone you love or know. We must come to the realization that the high rates of suicide and alcoholism along with the epidemic of domestic and child abuse, all due to the stress, depression and PTSD being created by multiple deployments, are literally tearing apart an entire generation of young families. How on earth can we allow this to go on. I urge you to print out this letter and send it to your state representatives. Demand a response, and don’t stop until you get one! We have to wake up to what is happening here, and demand a change. We simply cannot afford to look the other way another day!

With purpose,

Dannion

Spiritual Strategies for Living Well

               Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
